Unless Someone Like You Cares: The Quiet Heroes of Dog Rescue

RESCUE THOUGHTS

Our rescue was asked to assist in finding foster homes for a large hoarding case in our area. If you know our rescue, we focus mainly on adult dogs, specifically poodles & doodles (as it is my specific love). Every applicant must be vetted, references checked and homes visited. It is a daunting task with long hours and little-to-no tangible rewards. We are rewarded, however, with the knowledge that we have saved these innocent lives.

When a family steps up to foster a dog/puppy, they are volunteering for long hours, potty accidents, messy homes, and a little chaos. To welcome that into your own home is a sacrifice of huge proportion. Particularly with the knowledge that the circumstance might be temporary and one may not reap the rewards of a well trained adult companion dog in the end. Regardless, families have stepped up, opened their homes, convinced other family members, and joined our efforts. Yesterday we found three wonderful foster homes and today another two.

Many times I hear, "I dont know how people can foster, I would love them all and not be able to give them up." Well, the other option is that these poor dogs sit in a loud, over crowded shelter.

We are exhausted but keep pushing, for as the famous quote from The Lorax says, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.". This quote emphasizes the importance of individual action and responsibility. Another notable line for me is, "I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.". This quote has always resonated for me as I strive to be a voice for the voiceless.

What about you?
